Paleolithic Spear Head

Follow in the footsteps of your ancestors and experience the

remarkable technology of prehistoric peoples, who would have

mounted these spear heads to be used for hunting big game, many

hundreds of thousands of years ago. This spearhead is a typical

design, hand knapped from a Flint chunk and ready for hafting

(mounting to a shaft).

Stone tools were used as the tips on spears or darts. In

archaeological terminology, a ‘spear point’ was mounted on a

thrusting or hand-thrown weapon.

The earliest hafted stone points date around ca. 500,000 BP, made

by the Levallois core reduction method (a knapper shapes a flint

into a core to predetermine the size and shape of a single, large

flake, which is then struck off for use as a tool). Levallois points

were made by Neanderthals and possibly other archaic hominins,

as well as by early Homo sapiens.
