Mesolithic Adze - Antler Handle

This stone working technique represents an important step in the evolution of lithic technology, as it bridged the gap between the more rudimentary Paleolithic tools and the relatively polished tools of the Neolithic.

The mesolithic adze is a special little tool, and it's purpose lies in the tranchet cutting edge which forms a very strong chisel that prehistoric people would have used as an axe or for woodworking. The flake is removed parallel to the final intended cutting edge of the tool which creates a single straight and sharp cutting edge as wide as the tool itself. A lump is left on the back top edge to give the tool its strength, and the other side flattened to sit flush to the handle. These complex knapping requirements signal the advance of humankind into the Mesolithic age.
