Neanderthal Mousterian Toolkit

Flint Knapped Prehistoric Neanderthal toolkit made by me, a traditional prehistoric technique flint knapper.

Neanderthal tools are characterised by a highly technical process called the levallois technique. The Levallois technique is a distinctive type of stone knapping developed around 250,000 to 400,000 years ago during the Middle Palaeolithic period. It is part of the Mousterian stone tool industry, and was used by the Neanderthals in Europe. More sophisticated than earlier methods of lithic reduction, involving the striking of flakes from a prepared core.

These tools are an iconic example from the Mousterian industry, and represents the pinnacle of technology in the lower paleolithic. It includes a Cleaver, Mousterian spearpoint, and some Blades.

Each is unique and can be customised at request, made from locally sourced Flint in the UK.

- I can include photographs from raw nodule to finished flints and supply stands and certificates, even a little video of the making if you’d like.
