Neolithic/Bronze Age Flint Barbed and Tanged Arrowhead

The barbed and tanged arrowhead signals an accension in flint knapping technology during the late neolithic and early bronze age. Knapper's were able to make use of bronze tipped tools to create fine notches at the base, which created a middle 'tang' and two outer 'barbs'. This meant the arrowhead was superior for easy hafting onto an arrow, and the barbs caused prolonged damage to hunted prey. What makes the barbed and tanged arrowhead more interesting, is that it indicates the presence of a highly skilled class of flint knappers - the first artisans. Many of these arrowheads are exquisitely crafted and buried with their owners having never been used for hunting, this indicates the presence of social status and culture. It is also a marker of trade, as only the artisan flint knappers would have been able to make them.

The workmanship and presumed value of these Bronze Age arrowheads might mean they were sacred objects made for display by high-ranking chiefs.  Arrowheads found in non-burial, domestic contexts—and presumably used mostly in hunting—are more variable in shape.
